Smart Sensors

More and more school districts are turning to technology that detects chemicals from e-cigarettes, THC, and other chemicals that can be detected in the air and notify school staff that students could be vaping. Districts for years have been scrambling to address teens’ e-cigarette use, drawing on an assortment of measures, from education campaigns about vaping’s negative health impacts to e- cigarette buy-back programs. Today there are several manufacturers that have produced Smart Sensors to aid in battling this epidemic and we’re finding these devices very effective.

Many schools have decided to install Vape Detector Devices, or Smart Sensors as they are often called, and install them in areas they see students vaping the most, generally bathrooms and locker rooms. The goal is both to detect when students are using vape products and to discourage their use altogether. These Smart Sensor devices can be tied into campus security cameras that are located just outside the bathrooms and lockers rooms where these events are taking place and trigger the security camera system to bookmark and record students entering and leaving these areas. This allows the staff to identify individuals and educate them on the potential dangers. The Smart Sensor devices also send alert messages and alarms to key staff members that can quickly respond.

While the driving force behind the vapor detectors is to address vaping, they offer other features. By monitoring the air, the detectors can also notify staff of significant changes in temperature that could happen in the case of a fire or high humidity from, for example, a broken pipe. They can also notify staff of loud noises such as gunshots or fights (aggression) and identify which bathroom or area the sound event came from. The Smart Detectors also listen for and respond to keywords such as “Help” alerting staff members that someone is in distress.

To recap, these devices have become very popular within school districts and have proven to discourage these behaviors significantly. Districts want to educate their students and staff members about the dangers associated with vaping and smoking in general. Many districts are finding that funding is available to cover the cost of these Smart Sensors. For more information and to demo these Smart Sensors please contact us at Delta to learn more.
